Recent Applications of Carbon Nanotubes in Solid Phase Extraction and Preconcentration: A Review

The application of carbon nanotubes (CNT’s) for solid phase extraction (SPE) is still capturing the creative minds of the analytical chemists. This resulted in development of many modified procedures for difficult samples with improved analytical figures of merit. This review covers the most recent uses of CNT’s for SPE (up to December 31st, 2009) that has not been covered in previous reviews. It was found that the use of CNT's for metal and organo-metallic speciation is lagging behind other areas of research. Only very limited studies were concerned with exploring the effect of physical characteristics of the CNT on SPE process. Different forms or devices developed for utilization of CNT’s in SPE were also covered in this review. It was found that surface modification and functionlization of CNT’s proved itself as a powerful tool for improving the selectivity and efficiency of the SPE.

One-Pot Multi-Component Synthesis of Amidoalkyl Naphthols with Potassium Hydrogen Sulfate as Catalyst under Solvent-Free Condition

One-pot multicomponent condensation of β-naphthol, aromatic aldehydes, acetamide or urea in the presence of potassium hydrogen sulfate was carried out under solvent-free condition to afford amidoalkyl naphthols in 83%~96% yields.

Synthesis and Supramolecular Chemistry of Racemic Dinitrodiphenyldiquinoline Acetic Acid Cocrystal

The V-shape diquinoline 4 was synthesized and the solid-state structure of its acetic acid cocrystal was carefully investigated in term of crystal engineering and supramolecular chemistry. The suitable X-ray cocrystals were obtained by crystallization of diquinoline 4 from acetic acid. The structure adopted acid…pyridine hydrogen-bonded supramolecular heterosynthon in addition to other supramolecular non-covalent host-guest and host-host interactions. No proton-transfer process was detected; no salt formation.

Effect of the Medium on the Electronic Structures of the Anthranilic Acid Conformers: A Theoretical Study

The medium can cause substantial variable effects on the electronic structure of conformers when they switch among different types of H-bonds, which is considered a new addition to the H-bond theory.

Polarographic Investigations of Certain Propiophenone Benzoic Acid Hydrazones

The electrochemical behavior of certain 4’– substituted propiophenone benzoic acid hydrazones were investigated at the dropping mercury electrode by employing DC polarography. The variables that influence the electrode process were extensively studied. All compounds under investigation gave a single well defined polarographic wave. The mechanism for the electrode process was proposed in acid as well as in basic media.

Ab Initio Investigations of the Rearrangements of some
b-Haloalkoxides to Epoxides via G3 Calculations

The conformational analysis five b-chloro- and b-bromo-alkoxides had been done. The minima and the conformational transition states were determined. The anti conformer was found to be the most stable one. Its percentage is more than 99. α-Methylation increases the nuclophilicity of oxygen .Consequently, it enhances the rate of the ring closure. In contrast to b- methylation which retards the rate of the ring closure. This observation could be attributed to the reactivity of alkyl halides in SN2 reactions. The rearrangements of g and g- conformers to carbonyl compounds are not feasible. Therefore, the main rearrangement that takes place in b-haloalkoxides is the formation of epoxides.

Ab Initio Calculation and Spectroscopic Study of the 1,3-Dipolar Cycloaddition Reaction of  Benzyl Azide and Acrylic Acid

 The 1, 3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction of benzyl azide with acrylic acid has been studied using B3LYP (3-21G) density functional theory (DFT). It has been demonstrated that  the reaction leads to the formation of 1-benzyl-1,2,3-triazoline-4-carboxylic acid  at room temperature in the absence of solvent . Upon recrystallization from ethanol the ethyl ester of the product was formed. The structure of the compound was confirmed using IR, UV, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR and 2D-NMR. The structure of the other possible isomer has been proposed and and both isomers have been studied using Gaussian 03 to predict the possibility of their formation and to calculate the vibrational frequencies and related electronic properties. It has been found that the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction of benzyl azide with acrylic acid is highly regioselective and spontaneous at 298.15 K and 1 atm.

Influence of the Alloying Elements on Uniform and Pitting Corrosion Events Induced by SCN- Anions on Al-6061 and Al-Cu Alloys Surfaces

 The electrochemical and corrosion behaviour of Al-6061, Al-4.5%Cu and Al-7.5%Cu alloys were studied in 0.50 M KSCN solution at 25 oC. Open-circuit potential, Tafel polarization and ICP-AES measurements were used to study the uniform corrosion process on the surfaces of the tested alloys. Cyclic polarization measurements were employed for pitting corrosion studies. Obtained results were compared with pure Al. Alloyed copper was found to enhance uniform corrosion of Al in SCN- solutions to an extent depending on its content in the Al sample. The pitting potential (Epit) and the repassivation potential (Erp) increased with an increase in the alloyed copper content. Thus alloyed copper suppressed pit nucleation and propagation. The effect of temperature was also studied and the apparent activation energies were determined as a function of alloy composition. Among the investigated materials, Al-6061 alloy has the highest corrosion resistance towards uniform and pitting corrosion processes in KSCN solutions.
